Common Post-Summer Skin Concerns

Summer can make us feel healthier and more energised, but prolonged exposure to sunshine, heat, air conditioning and travel can leave the skin looking quite different by the end of the season.

You might notice that your skin feels drier, looks duller or has developed uneven areas of pigmentation. Fine lines may also appear more noticeable when the skin is dehydrated.

August is therefore a good time to assess what your skin needs rather than immediately reaching for another new product.

Some of the concerns we commonly see following the summer months include:

  • dryness and dehydration;
  • dull or tired-looking skin;
  • uneven skin tone;
  • dark patches or pigmentation;
  • increased redness or sensitivity;
  • rougher skin texture; and
  • more noticeable fine lines.

These concerns do not all have the same cause, so they should not automatically be treated in the same way.

Why Does Pigmentation Become More Noticeable?

Pigmentation occurs when the skin produces increased amounts of melanin, the pigment that gives our skin its colour.

Sun exposure can make freckles, age spots and existing areas of pigmentation appear darker or more noticeable. Melasma—a condition that causes patches of pigmentation, commonly on the face—can also be aggravated by sunlight.

Although pigmentation is usually harmless, any new, unusual or changing mark should be assessed by a medical professional. Aesthetic treatments should never be used to disguise or treat a lesion that has not been properly identified.

Start With Sun Protection

The most important part of any pigmentation or post-summer skincare plan is continued sun protection.

Sun protection is not only for holidays or particularly hot days. UVA can contribute to premature skin ageing and pigmentation throughout the year.

Good habits include:

  • using a broad-spectrum sunscreen of at least SPF 30;
  • applying it generously before going outdoors;
  • reapplying regularly, particularly after swimming or towel-drying;
  • wearing a hat and protective clothing; and
  • seeking shade during the strongest part of the day.

No sunscreen provides complete protection, so it should be used alongside shade and appropriate clothing.

Does Your Skincare Need to Change?

It is tempting to respond to dull or uneven skin by introducing several strong products at once. However, this can cause irritation and may make some skin concerns worse.

A simpler approach is often more effective:

  • cleanse gently;
  • restore hydration;
  • use daily sun protection;
  • avoid aggressive scrubbing; and
  • introduce active ingredients gradually and professionally.

Medical-grade skincare may contain stronger active ingredients than many standard products. This means professional guidance is important, particularly if you are treating pigmentation, sensitivity or signs of ageing.

At Face & Skin, Dr Shah is trained to consult and prescribe Obagi and ZO skincare products and can recommend other options where appropriate.

Which Professional Treatments Could Help?

The most suitable treatment will depend on your skin type, the cause of the concern and the result you are hoping to achieve.

A personalised skin plan may include options designed to:

  • improve hydration;
  • brighten dull-looking skin;
  • support skin renewal;
  • improve uneven texture;
  • soften the appearance of fine lines; or
  • address certain types of pigmentation.

Treatments available at Face & Skin include medical-grade skincare programmes, mesotherapy, microneedling, skin boosters and other regenerative treatments.

However, more treatment is not always better. Certain procedures may need to be timed carefully around sun exposure, holidays and tanning. This is why consultation and treatment planning are so important.

A Personalised Plan, Not a Fashionable Fix

Two people can have similar-looking skin concerns but require completely different approaches.

At Face & Skin, we begin by listening to what concerns you, examining your skin and discussing your medical history, lifestyle and expectations.

We can then recommend a realistic treatment or skincare plan designed for your individual needs. The aim is healthier, fresher-looking skin with natural results, not changing what makes you look like you.
